Recipe 14 : How to Fix Foam Latex

Cooking foam latex is difficult. When you open the mold and see the result... sometimes, it's not so good. Surface bubbles, thick seams, and ripped skin. Don't worry, some damage can be fixed without cooking another piece. I will show you how to fix it.

  1. Burning Seam

    1. Normally, seams cannot be avoided when you have a 3-piece mold. If you use a 2-piece mold (Positive and Negative), there are no seams unless it is a very old mold.

    2. In the video, I am using foam latex gloves from RBFX. Their prosthetics are created by Hollywood professionals and come in handy when we do not have any prep time. Foam latex gloves are normally cast in a 5-piece mold (Thumb, ring finger-pinky finger, middle finger-hand-forearm, palm negative mold & top hand negative mold.)

    3. You will need a soldering iron or a waxing pen to burn the seams. Set the iron at 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

    4. Turn a vent on since the burning latex will cause toxic fumes. You should not inhale this.

    5. As soon as the iron touches the seam, the latex will melt. Try to follow the skin texture and slightly go deeper than the skin surface. You will fill the depth later.

  1. Seaming with Bondo

    1. There are several ways to fill the seam. It can be done with thickened liquid latex, foam latex, and Bondo. In this recipe, I will use Bondo.

Bondo is a mixture of Pros Aide and Cabosil.

    2. Bondo is a mixture of Pros-Aide & Cabosil. My favorite consistency is peanut butter softness. Wear a mask when you mix Cabosil. Inhaling Cabosil will cause lung issues.

    3. Use a spatula and take a small amount of Bondo. The first layer should create a flat surface. When you see a big wrinkle, create the wrinkle lines with Bondo.

    4. If you have bubbles in the prosthetic, you can fill them with Bondo. If the bubble is big, put a small piece of foam latex or sponge before filling with Bondo. Bondo takes a long time to dry if it is thick.

    5. Before Bondo dries, dip a makeup sponge in water and taper the edge of Bondo.

    6. The next layer is Cream Bondo. It is a little smoother than Bondo, almost like yogurt consistency.

    7. Rip a makeup sponge to create a texture. Take Cream Bondo and stipple on the flattened seam. Slower stippling makes a rougher texture. Faster stippling makes a finer texture.

    8. Let it dry. Put RCMA No Color Powder (or baby powder).

Using water with a sponge will make the Bondo smoother.

  1. Now you've learned how to fix foam latex prosthetics. You can use this technique for old prosthetics as well and paint over them again. The next blog will be about painting on the mask we made this time. Stay tuned!
