Recipe 8 : Latex Prosthetic for Beginners - Mold Making

Making prosthetics seems fun, but you do not know where to start? Then, you are in the right place! I will explain how to make prosthetics with liquid latex with a low cost.

This is a step-by-step guide on how to create fake injury prosthetics. It will be a 4-part blog series this time. Part 1 was about designing latex prosthetics. This Part 2 is about molding the design. We will use plaster such as Plaster of Paris, Hydrocal, or Ultracal 30. Part 3 is casting in latex, and Part 4 will be applying the prosthetics (and removal). Maybe you can make zombie makeup or Chucky makeup for Halloween? Or you can even make Harry Potter's scar on his forehead!

Lesson Video 2

  1. Prep Sculpture

    1. You will need to seal the sculpture before molding. Spray 2 layers of Crystal Clear. Each layer needs to be dry. This will make the sculpture strong. Do not use a hair dryer. The sculpture will melt with hot air.

    2. Next, spray Dulling Spray. This will make the plaster come off easily when it is done, as it prevents liquid plaster from beading on the surface.

  2. Making Walls (Dam)

    1. In this step, we are making a clay wall. It is like a dam.

    2. Cut Water Clay (WED Clay) into 1-inch thickness. Place it around the sculpture. Place it all around. Keep the wall 1 inch away from the edge of the sculpture. Also, you can use a cup with its bottom trimmed and glue the cup on the board with hot glue if you do not have water clay.

    3. Check that the top of the wall is higher than the top of the prosthetic sculpture. If not, add more WED Clay on top of the dam wall.

  1. Molding

    1. Pour a small amount of water into a bowl. (Paint Vaseline on the bottom of the bowl)

    2. Sprinkle Ultracal 30 (or Hydrocal/Plaster of Paris) into the water until the surface looks like a dried lake.

    3. Mix it with your hand or a stir stick. Ensure no chunks are left in the mixture.

    4. Tap the side of the bowl to pop air bubbles.

    5. Brush a thin layer of plaster on the positive mold.

    6. Blow air to pop surface bubbles. This is very important and do not skip. Otherwise, the finished prosthetics will have goosebump textures.

    7. Pour the rest of the plaster into the dam.

    8. Tap the table to pop more bubbles. Check that there is no leakage.

    9. Wait for 2 hours. It will get hot before it gets completely hard.

    10. That is it for mold making! Now you have a mold to replicate the design with latex!

  1. Latex prosthetic is one of the cheapest appliances. If you are not allergic to latex, I really recommend you. Make multiple of these and create zombie makeup, or a stitched-up face and body to make Frankenstein! In Part 3, I will explain how to cast this prosthetic in Latex!
