Halloween is right around the corner. Do you need something cool but don't have much money? You can make your own prosthetics with liquid latex. Maybe you can create zombie makeup or Chucky makeup for Halloween. Or you can even make Harry Potter's scar on his forehead! I will explain how to make prosthetics with liquid latex at a low cost.

This is a step-by-step guide on how to create fake injury prosthetics. It will be a 4-part blog series this time. Part 1 was about designing latex prosthetics, and Part 2 was molding them. This Part 3 is casting in latex. We will use liquid latex and replicate the design. Then, this will be your custom-made prosthetic! Part 4 will be applying the prosthetics (and removal).

Opening Mold
Once the mold cools down, it is ready to open.
Take WED Clay wall out. If it is still soft, you can reuse the WED Clay later.
Use a scraper or screw driver to pop a mold from the board.
Sand off sharp edges with a Shinto rasp or regular rasp.
use a wooden tool to take off clay from the mold. Do not use a metal tool to clean the mold surface.
Clean the residue with lacquer thinner. Also, 99% alcohol works for cleaning. (In the video, there was no residue. So it did not require cleaning clay off.
After it is clean, brush on a furniture paste wax and buff it off. This will fill micro bubbles. Do this 2 times.

Clean completely.
Latex Casting
You will need makeup sponges and Liquid Latex. I used Balloon Rubber Latex for this. However, you can use regular Liquid Latex. Balloon Rubber Latex is thinner and more flexible.
Cut the makeup sponge into small pieces. Dip it in liquid latex and start stippling on the mold.
Begin with the center and go toward the end of the textured area. Do not stipple on the smooth area. Textured area only. Let the first layer dry.

Keep it within the sculpted area. Stipple another layer. Dry it again. Do not pass the edge of the first layer, slightly inside the line. We will need to make a tapered edge.
Continue the same process until the desired thickness. (For Balloon Rubber, you need at least 10 layers.) As you stipple layers, sponges might get dried latex chunks. Then, use a new sponge.

Each layer goes inner than the previous layer. After enough layers, stipple another latex layer in the center where you want some thickness. And put some ripped cotton over the wet latex before it dries. Then, stipple another layer of latex. Do not pass the edge of the latex. Let it dry completely. If you need more thickness, repeat this again.

Laying cotton pieces.
Powdering Prosthetic
Make sure latex layers are all dried. Then, put RCMA No Color Powder (or Baby Powder) on the latex. Use a wooden stick to lift up the edge. As you lift it up, put more powder. Unpowdered fresh latex will stick to each other.
Now you have a custom-made latex prosthetic!

Latex prosthetic is one of the cheapest appliances. If you are not allergic to latex, I really recommend you. Make multiple of these and create zombie makeup, or a stitched-up face and body to make Frankenstein! In Part 4, I will explain how to apply this and remove the makeup off.
